Olympics confirms VR and 8K

Some of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be covered in 8K ‘Super Hi-Vision’ (for Japan), and there will be 4K Ultra HD versions created for testing and comparison purposes. The 8K versions for Japan will include ‘immersive’ audio using what Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) describe as “3D 22.2 channel audio surround sound”.

Some 130 hours (out of a claimed 7,000 hours of actual TV coverage) of 8K Super Hi-Vision will be beamed from Brazil to Japan, including live coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as Swimming, Judo, Athletics, Basketball and Football. In addition, an ENG camera crew will capture select sports at other venues, “including the Olympic spirit and atmosphere” for re-play later.

OBS will also capture 4K Ultra HD of the same events which will be down-converted from the 8K signals. However, it is not likely that these 4K signals will be seen by consumers during the Games. While in some cases the signals are available to the main client broadcasters of OBS, again for test and evaluation purposes, there are no plans to broadcast these signals to the public.

OBS says it hopes it will also be able to conduct experiments with Wider Colour Gamut and High Dynamic Range technologies during the high resolution transmissions.

However, for the very first time, OBS will be capturing Virtual Reality footage at the Olympics. Using a compatible headset, viewers will be “virtually transported to the heart of the Olympic action with VR coverage including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and one key event per day,” says the broadcaster. The VR signals will be available live through compatible VR technology, but also downloadable as VoD material. OBS says that highlights of its VR footage will also be viewable without the need for VR headsets.

All of the 7,000 hours of planned coverage will be in high-definition and 5.1 Surround Sound, and the signals beamed to more than 220 countries and territories and a potential audience of more than 5 billion viewers.

Odotan kyllä aika kovin jo vuoden 2020 olympialaisia.

8K tulee!

Panasonic and Sony will partner with broadcaster NHK and others to develop technology for televisions capable of handling ultrahigh-resolution 8K video, building an all-Japanese alliance to reclaim market share lost to foreign rivals.

Japanese players took an early lead in the flat-screen TV market but were outpaced by growing South Korean and Chinese competitors in the mid-2000s. Sony and Sharp were the only Japan-based companies among the top 10 manufacturers of flat-screen TVs by sales last year. Panasonic and Sony plan to focus on high-value-added products such as 8K TVs.

Such 8K video boasts four times the resolution of 4K -- now considered the highest resolution on the market -- allowing for realistic graphics even on large screens. Japan plans to begin full-scale 8K broadcasting as early as 2018, getting a jump on the rest of the world. But this will require advanced technology that is difficult to develop. Panasonic and Sony will seek to bring other Japanese businesses on board, splitting the burden of development costs.

NHK will oversee efforts to ensure high-quality broadcasts and develop related standards. The team will work on the required data compression and sound technology as well. Socionext, a chip company formed from the merger of the system large-scale integration businesses of Fujitsu and Panasonic, is expected to help develop processors.

Sony plans to roll out 8K-compatible TVs in 2020. Though Panasonic did not give a specific date, the company will aim for a launch in time to capitalize on TV purchases made ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Since the pair will be competing in the same market, they will work to differentiate their products.

The 8K content will not be available right away, meaning the market will need time to grow. As such, Panasonic and Sony concluded that solo development of 8K technology likely would be unprofitable. The two companies will work on 8K while continuing to focus on 4K TVs, which have been selling well.

Panasonic and Sony are expected to apply 8K technology to a variety of other devices as well, such as digital cameras. They and the rest of the Japanese alliance hope to seize the initiative on next-generation broadcasting technology with government support, bringing it to the world on Japan's terms.

Oppo pistää soitinta tulemaan. Jos tuon saa normireiskojen osalta aluekoodittomaksi niin se on siinä! UHD-levyt ovat siis valmiiksi aluekoodittomia.

Sony jatkaa omia polkujaan.

Sharp rushing ahead of rivals to release 8K TVs in China, Japan
http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201709250005.html

Sharp Corp. said it will release the world’s first commercially available 8K-compatible TV sets in October in China and on Dec. 1 in Japan.

The 70-inch model to be marketed in Japan will be priced at around 1 million yen ($9,100), excluding tax.

The ultra-high definition liquid crystal TV series will become available in Taiwan in February and in Europe in March, Sharp said.

Through a receiver released separately, the new TV sets can receive 8K broadcast programs, which offer picture quality that is four times more detailed than the 4K standard.

Sharp’s new sets can also convert lower-definition programs into 8K quality, the company said.

Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) is expected to start its 8K broadcasting on a full-scale basis in December 2018.

Sharp decided to market an 8K TV set before 8K broadcasts start in Japan to get a head start on its rivals.

The Japanese company is proceeding with its business reconstruction plans under the umbrella of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. of Taiwan and intends to make products based on its 8K technology its core business.

The 8K TVs to be sold in Japan will be manufactured in Sharp’s plant in Yaita, Tochigi Prefecture.

LG charts OLED TV roadmap - 8K in 2019

Roll-able could be here by 2020

LG Display hosted the 2017 Europe OLED Day in Munich last week and, in the process, unveiled its plans for OLED TVs and displays for the next few years.

LG sees (quality conscious) Europe as a,"a critical battleground for premium TVs" and stated its intent that "OLED will be at the top of the list of customer considerations for the holidays."

The manufacturer said that it will release its first 8K Ultra HD OLED TVs in 2019 and that it intends to increase sizes to 80-inches and beyond – presumably so you could see the benefits of the resolution hike – but, of course, LG is very conscious that there won’t be much – if any – content to support the resolution of the panels. The lack of format support didn’t really prevent the manufacturers from releasing 4K Ultra HD TVs but at least the prospect of content was there in the foreseeable future, whereas with 8K, there’s almost nothing on the horizon.

LG Disaply also indicated that we would see the first ‘roll-up’ OLED screens as early as 2020 as well as the first dual-screen OLED displays. Sang-Deog Yeo, President of LG Display, also revealed that smaller OLED ‘tiles’ of around forty inches were also incoming but would not be drawn on a potential release schedule.

The event also provided the opportunity for a spot of OLED tub-thumping – and why wouldn’t it – where it was revealed that there are now nine manufacturers selling OLED TV, globally, with a grand total of 96 models currently available versus only nine, just four years ago.

In the entire Premium TV market, which LG sets the bottom floor for pricing at 1300 Euro, OLED TVs now account for twenty five percent of total revenues against 13% in 2016. To refelect these successes, LG Display will increase its ‘slab’ production. The number of slabs produced in 2016 was a cool one million while 2017 doubled that figure and, by 2020, LG expects to be churning out more than 6 million slabs annually.

Sharp's $77,000 camcorder shows that 8K is coming soon

Sharp has unveiled an 8K camcorder that is undoubtedly aimed at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but will be equally at home on a film set. Looking like an old-school ENG news camera, the 8C-B60A captures 8K, 10-bit 60fps video onto a large, Super 35mm sensor that's around the same size as the one on Red's Helium Weapon 8K. The custom 2TB SSD pack, developed in collaboration with Astrodesign, can hold about 40 minutes of 8K video.

With a large sensor and PL mount that can handle lenses from Zeiss, Leica and others, the 8C-B60A should be able to capture beautiful, cinematic images and not just sports and news. To handle such unweildy images (7,680 x 4,320, or about 33 megapixels), Sharp is using Grass Valley's HQX codec that reduces file sizes while requiring minimal processing, making storage, transmissions and editing chores easier.

While other companies like RED and Sony have released 8K cameras, Sharp's model has a lot of features that are clearly for broadcasters. That includes an integrated top-handle and viewfinder, simultaneous recording and output to, say, a truck or studio, and that distinctive ENG look, complete with a shoulder pad.

While $77,000 is clearly a lot, it's chump change for big broadcasters and producers. By unexpectedly introducing a camera like this, Sharp is pushing the 8K agenda ahead for broadcasters, particularly in Japan. Sharp happens to make 8K televisions as well, so once we all get bored of 4K, it wants to have the next thing to sell us.
